Question
  1. Why should I consider a vertical roof versus a horizontal roof?As displayed on our carport and garage sections of the website, the ridges of the steel panels in a horizontal roof run parallel to the sides and ridges of the carport or garage. Water, snow, etc., will drain to the front and back of the building towards the door openings. If the building is perfectly level, water will tend to pond on a horizontally installed roof. On a vertical roof, the ridges of the steel panels run from the top of the carport or garage to the sides. This roof configuration displaces water, snow, etc., much more efficiently, and water will not pond on the roof. Water will also drain away from the door openings (unless the doors are installed on the sides of the carports or garages).
Question
  1. What are the on center spacing of the frame legs/bows? As a general rule, the spacing of the frame legs/bows are 4 feet or 5 feet on center.
Question
  1. What is the height in the center of the building if I order a certain height leg?You can calculate this measurement. For example, if the carport/garage is a Standard Style Double unit, 20 feet wide with 7 feet legs, add 3′ 0″ to the 7 feet leg height for a total center height of 10′.
Question
  1. Can I just buy a standard steel building that’s pre-designed?Yes and No. At J,C,s Metal Building Sales, some of our smaller buildings are pre-designed and are appropriate for any climate in the U.S.We have pre-designed buildings in larger sizes as well, but we need to make slight modifications to them so that the frames are the right strength to meet the Building Code requirements for your area. That means that if you live in an area that experiences high winds or an area where there are heavy snow loads in the winter, you’ll have a building that’s designed to resist those loads. In addition, your local authority may have special planning requirements or building bylaws that we need to take into consideration
Question
  1. Do I really need insulation? What is it good for?Insulation is not required but it is highly recommended. 1-386-277-2851 If you are heating or cooling a building insulation will save you on electricity expenses by preventing heat transfer in or out of your building. Insulation is also good for noise reduction and condensation control.
Question
  1. What purpose do the wind girts on a metal building serve? The wind girts on a metal building support the metal siding. In technical terms, they transfer the wind load from the siding to the vertical supports. The wind girts are needed because, even though our metal siding is very strong and durable, it is not rigid enough to span the entire vertical height of a building without buckling in high winds or in the event of an impact. The metal panels need some back-up. The wind girts are useful for other things, too. They can support insulation and interior finishes, and they help resist horizontal wind forces from the adjacent sides of the building as well as wind that hits them head-on.

We can work with you to figure out exactly what’s required, and we can almost certainly provide it to you at a reasonable price. Question
  1. What kind of panel options do I have?Metal panels vary in rib design, gauge, and color depending on the desired design and application of the building. Custom finishes can be added to panels to mimic the look of almost any other type of building material, including stone, brick, wood, concrete.
Question
  1. What roof is better for a concrete block garage: asphalt shingles on wood or metal roofing on metal framing?Looking for the best roof for a concrete block garage? Many homeowners and business owners find uses for concrete block garages, mostly because they are so easy to create. However, the roof presents a persistent challenge that must be overcome if you want to have the safest and most secure concrete block garage possible. For different concrete block garages, there are different approaches and considerations when considering the best roof options. Some people prefer to match the appearance of their garage roof to their house, and that’s a good reason to choose a wood or metal structure with standard sheathing and asphalt shingles rather than a metal roof. Depending on where your concrete block garage is located, matching the roof to your home’s roof is almost essential. Imagine what it would look like if both were street facing and the roofs did not match? It would take away from the appearance and curb appeal of both your home and your garage.
Question
  1. What information do I need to get a quote?A general steel building quote can be created with the length, width and height dimensions of a building. To get an exact quote of a building we will need to determine the design details of the building. This includes things like doors, windows, panel options, insulation etc.

To construct a small metal building such as a shed, you’ll need: Wrenches to tighten the bolts A cordless drill for the self-tapping screws A long level to make sure that everything is straight A spud wrench or large screwdriver to line up the bolt holes on the main beams Larger buildings may require rented construction equipment, such as a scissor lift or a crane lift. In addition, if you plan to build the foundation yourself, you’ll need additional tools and equipment. Talk to the engineers at J.C.s 1-386-277-2851 to get an idea of what might be needed, given the size and height of your metal building.
